Dxtory Best Settings — High performance codec with small file size

Dxtory is one of the best game recorders available on Windows. It is extremely fast since it receives the data directly through a surface memory buffer.

Although the default configuration for Dxtory is set up for lossless quality recordings, not everyone may find it suitable. There are several settings that need to be changed if you want the highest quality and performance with a small file size.

One of the best features of Dxtory is that it supports third party VFW codecs. Therefore, we can use a codec that is suitable for most users.

Dxtory with x264vfw Codec

For the purpose of storage and playback, videos are compressed using video codecs. Videos will be compressed differently depending on the codec being used. Some codecs retain almost flawless quality but they tend to have enormous file sizes.

The codec you may want to use with Dxtory is x264vfw since it produces very small files with excellent quality and performance.

We can download install x264vfw here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/x264vfw/

After installing, restart Dxtory and then select x264vfw codec from the drop-down list.

Selecting Dxtory video codec

After that, click the pen icon next to the codec name to modify its configuration.

The settings that need to be changed includes selecting the ultrafast preset and enabling fast decode. If you don’t want logs to be shown, we can also set the log level to none.

You can also adjust the scaling and frame rate in the Dxtory video settings if you need more performance.

Dxtory Codec Alternatives

Here are some alternative codecs for Dxtory in case you want to give one a try.

Lagarith Lossless Video Codec

Compared to the built-in Dxtory video codec, Lagarith is also a lossless video codec that provides better compression. Even so, the file sizes it produces are still huge. https://lags.leetcode.net/codec.html

UtVideo Codec

UtVideo Codec is also a lossless video codec that supports multithreading and performs better than Lagarith. It is lossless so expect large file sizes. https://github.com/umezawatakeshi/utvideo/releases/latest

MagicYUV is another lossless video codec that seems to outperform Lagarith and UtVideo. You can always give it a try yourself. https://www.magicyuv.com/
